TravelTime Matrix API

A distance matrix API built for scale. Calculate travel times from one location to 100,000 others in a few hundred milliseconds, for every transport mode.

With the TravelTime Matrix API you can:

  • Calculate travel times from one origin to up to 100,000 destinations in a single search
  • Include public transport alongside driving, cycling and walking
  • Label every destination as reachable or unreachable within a travel time limit
  • Return distance and UK public transport fares alongside travel time
  • Run unlimited requests on a fixed annual price, with no per-element charge

What the Travel Time Matrix API returns

The Travel Time Matrix API returns the travel time between an origin and a set of destinations for a chosen transport mode. Destinations beyond your maximum travel time are returned as unreachable. Depending on the endpoint, results can also include distance, a distance breakdown by mode, route details and UK public transport fares.

❯01 Transport modes

Public transport and multi-modal matrices

Door-to-door travel times including walking, waiting and interchanges. Most matrix APIs only handle road modes.

Public transport times are built from published timetables. Combine modes, such as cycling to a station, to reflect the real journeys people take.

❯02 Transport modes

Traffic-aware driving times

Driving times modelled on typical conditions at the departure or arrival time, so you can plan around peak and off-peak traffic.

❯03 Transport modes

Global multi-modal coverage

Walking, cycling, driving, and public transport models live across the globe.

❯04 Bulk matrices

One-to-many and many-to-one

Calculate from one origin to many destinations, from many origins to one destination, or many to many in a single request.

❯05 Bulk matrices

Reachable or unreachable

Set a travel time cut-off and every destination is labelled automatically, so there’s no filtering on your side.

❯06 Bulk matrices

Protobuf for maximum scale

A binary format for the largest requests and lowest payload size. Built for large-scale applications.

Up to 10 searches of 100,000 destinations each on the Fast endpoint, or one search of around 2 million destinations with Protobuf.

Reproducible travel time results

Travel times are modelled on timetables and typical traffic conditions, so the same request returns the same result.

Re-run calculations

Repeat a matrix and get identical results, which suits audits, regulators and A/B tests.

Consistent search ranking

Commute-based filters on digital marketplaces stay stable from one search to the next.

No live traffic anomalies

Typical conditions mean one-off incidents don’t skew planning results or analysis.

TravelTime Matrix API FAQs

A travel time matrix API calculates travel times between sets of origins and destinations. You send an origin, a list of destinations and a transport mode, and it returns how long each journey takes. It's also called a distance matrix API.

Up to 10 searches of 100,000 destinations each on the Fast endpoint. The Protobuf endpoint accepts one search of up to 10 MB, roughly 2 million destinations. Google and Mapbox cap requests at 625 elements.

A single request can process 100,000 locations in a few hundred milliseconds.

Yes. Public transport times are built from published timetables and include walking, waiting and interchanges, at full matrix scale.

4 hours on the standard endpoint and 3 hours on the Fast endpoints, extendable on request. Destinations beyond the limit are returned as unreachable.

Yes, on the standard Travel Time Matrix endpoint. The Fast endpoints calculate for a typical weekday morning.

Yes, for driving, walking and cycling on the standard endpoint. Distance isn't returned for public transport journeys.

Yes, for UK public transport. Add fares to the requested properties.

Globally, for every transport mode.

Yes. There's no requirement to use our map libraries or SDKs, and no restriction on where results appear.

A fixed annual price with unlimited requests, rather than per element, so cost doesn't grow with matrix size.
